Christ Defeats Satan
Good vs. Evil
Light vs. Darkness
Love vs. Hate
Calm vs. Fear
Peace vs. War
Day vs. Night
We live in a world of extremes. And yet, Christians continue to flourish, despite the conflicts surrounding us.
Why is that?
The answer is because we believe that Christ protects us from evil through His teachings and His Church. And, as a result, we live contentedly within ourselves, which is defined by inner peace and joy. We also live contentedly without ourselves, which is defined by kindness and graciousness towards others.
We live for others, not ourselves, as we give our time and our God-given talents and gifts for the betterment of others. And yet, we live for ourselves, only in that we have chosen to follow Christ and His Church and remain on the righteous path to Heaven.
As a result, we know Christ, and His Church, will provide us with the comfort we require while we walk through our own Valley of Tears here on earth. He continues to be our guiding light, our Savior, our defender, our protector and our inspiration.
We also know that He will give us the courage we will need to overcome the trials and tribulations that we will inevitably experience while in this imperfect world where Satan works incessantly, and surreptitiously, to steal souls from God. And so, we are not easily fooled by Satan’s efforts to tempt us away from Christ.
Satan (Lucifer) was one of God the Father’s archangels. He was called Morningstar due to his beauty. But, through his prideful arrogance, and his efforts at self-deification, he chose to begin a rebellion against the Father, “I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself the Most High.” Isaiah 14:14
As we all know, he failed. And God literally THREW Satan out of Heaven where he fell to earth “like lightning from Heaven” Luke 10:18 and became the ruler of Hell. St. Augustine of Hippo states that the devil’s rebellion was the first and final cause of evil. Satan has been causing nothing but trouble ever since.
But, fear not, as Chris’ coin shows, Satan will never defeat Christ because Satan is a creation of God Almighty. And as such, he will always be vanquished by God.
Another example of this conflict between good and evil concerns the Catholic Church. The Church was established on earth by Christ through St. Peter when Christ said, “Upon this Rock (meaning Peter’s unwavering faith in Christ as Son of Living God) I will build my church.” Matthew 16:18.
Today, despite the fact that the Church is suffering through another tragic period induced by human frailty, she continues to give hope to humanity through Christ’s promise to Peter that, “The gates of Hell shall not prevail against it,” Matthew 16:18.
Chris’ coin, Christ Defeats Satan, once again exemplifies Christ’s promise that Satan will always be defeated by Him, and so too, that the Church will never be destroyed by evil, or death, and that it will survive until His return.
This promise should give us all a sense of sublime inner peace.
