Honor Guard: The Legacy of Silver Shields and Alexander's Elite Soldiers

In ancient Greek history, the Macedonian Honor Guard, was comprised of an elite force of soldiers under Alexander III’s command. They were gifted athletes, and as such, were the strongest, bravest, and at a time when the life expectancy was just 45, some of the oldest soldiers in his army.

Alexander the Great had been tutored by Aristotle until the age of 16. When his father, Phillip III, died he was just 20 years old. He then followed in his father’s footsteps and became the ruler of Macedonia in Ancient Greece. Alexander spent the next ten years leading a military campaign that would extend his father’s original Greek territory through northwestern India. Under his leadership, his army was undefeated and his empire became one of the largest in history.

The name given to Alexander’s Honor Guard was Argyraspides. They carried silver-plated shields, which defined them as the best of the best. Their reputation preceded them, causing regional terror as they approach new lands.

Alexander continues to be considered one of the greatest military commanders in history despite his having died almost 2,400 years ago at the age of 32. His conquests changed the known world as he defeated Thebes, Persia and conquered large areas of India. Alexander established 50 cities during his military career, most of which were named after him. Alexandria in Egypt becoming the most successful.
