The Meaning Behind Memento Vivere

Chris’ new coin, Memento Vivere, is a reminder to literally slow down and take time to smell the roses.

How many instances have there been recently when you intended to take some time for yourself, whether it included a walk on the beach, a swim in the lake, a visit to a church or just spending time visiting with old friends, and you never seem to get around to it?

When Life Gets in the Way of Living

Life always seems to get in the way. Unfortunately, the recent invention of the internet is to blame for most of our hectic schedules. Its intrusive nature constantly subjects people to a barrage of “information”, disguised as obligations, that are not only time-consuming to address, but in many ways, totally overwhelming. So many things, so little time.

There are many dangers associated with this rat race, other than the necessity of staying indoors to use the internet. This black hole of technology forces humanity into pigeon holes from which they are very unlikely to extricate themselves. Whether it's sitting on your butt most of the day while engaged with the internet, or trying to text, or email, while driving at 70 mph down the highway or checking your emails on your phone at two o’clock in the morning, just because you can, rather than getting the sleep you need.

Modern Habits That Disconnect Us From Reality

Life has literally become a frenetic race to the bottom. And, we can blame this on the soaring use of the internet by people worldwide. It has invaded our private lives like nothing ever before and leaves us exhausted trying to keep up with the nonsense.

The previous, and very distinct line, between mankind’s public and private lives has been annihilated. There is no down-time, peace or even free-time. Everyone is now “busy” nearly 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Busy primarily with surfing the net or checking, deleting or sending emails or texts. This creature has made life even more frustrating because despite its purported lightning communication speed, it has actually slowed down communication when compared to simply making a phone call.

Speaking comes instinctually. It’s fast and instantly understandable. Writing, or worse yet, typing words into your phone, is not. Most people do not communicate well when writing, especially men. This is mainly because the written word requires work. It necessitates patience, editing, corrections and, most importantly, stillness in order to perfect the writing before you can hit the send button. And, as a result, it takes huge chunks out of your daily allotment of time while also isolating you from everything and everyone around you.

This exasperating form of communication is particularly frustrating for men because they are by nature action-oriented and speaking has always been their go-to form of communication. Now they have been decelerated by the internet’s requirement that you must write down nearly EVERYTHING.

How Technology Interferes With Authentic Interaction

Sure, you can speak into your phone, but how well does that usually go? Correct. Despite auto- correct, which offers groups of letters to choose from that aren’t even words, it's more of the same - editing, deletes, corrections and rewrites.

For men, typing a message, rather than speaking directly to someone, also negates their ability to read the other person’s body language, facial expressions and gestures which leads to misinterpretation of the written message too. Many times the point of an email is totally lost in the text due to the vagaries of an individual's writing skills or lack thereof.

So, the next time you get annoyed by the inescapable necessity of using the internet to communicate with people, just remember the words on Chris’ new coin, Memento Vivere, which translates to, “Remember That You Must Live”.

A Call to Step Outside and Truly Live

It is a clarion call to seek the soothing nature of the great outdoors, which is so beautifully sculpted onto the surface of Chris’ bright silver coin.  It’s a reminder that the next time you find yourself in a panic because you can’t find your phone, that it's time to refresh, restore and revitalize yourself. It’s time to take a deep breath, call a friend and take a walk in God’s benevolent biosphere.
