Sacred Heart V2
Sacred Heart V2 – A Silver Tribute to Divine Devotion
Chris’ new coin, Sacred Heart V2, revisits an iconic religious image of Jesus that continues to inspire mankind despite having been painted in Rome, for the very first time, in 1767.
This first depiction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was painted by Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787). He painted this renowned image of Christ for the Jesuit Church of the Gesu in Rome. Batoni’s inspiration for this unprecedented portrait of Jesus came from the visions that St. Margaret Mary Alacoque experienced in France in the 1670s.
The Vision of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
Margaret Mary was a simple French nun who was a member of the Visitation Order of sisters.
On December 27, 1673, which was the Feast of St. John the Evangelist, Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary while she was praying before the Blessed Sacrament. It was here, in the Visitation Chapel, that Jesus told Sister Margaret Mary about His desire for men to embrace a devotion to His Sacred Heart. She wrote, “I saw this divine Heart as on a throne of flames, more brilliant than the sun and transparent as crystal. It had its adorable wound and was encircled with a crown of thorns, which signified the pricks our sins caused Him.” The flames represented Jesus’ burning love for His children.
Over the course of eighteen months, Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary a total of three times. Each appearance occurred while she was praying in her order’s chapel, which was located within the Monastery of the Visitation in Paray-le-Monial in France. St. Margaret Mary later recalled that her vision of the Sacred Heart was surmounted with a cross which was filled with all of the pain, sorrow, contempt and humiliations Jesus suffered during His life and Passion.
Jesus told St. Margaret Mary that men should turn to Him in love, and devotion, so as to avoid the path to perdition onto which Satan was herding great numbers of men. She wrote that Jesus, through His Sacred Heart, wanted to bring men “under the sweet liberty of the empire of His love.”
Batoni’s Life and Legacy in Art
Pompeo Batoni who was born in Lucca, Italy, was the son of a goldsmith. As tradition dictated, young Pompeo became a goldsmith too. But, at the age of 19, he left his father’s business and traveled to Rome to study the art of painting. While there he became a proficient sculptor as well as a prominent portrait painter, including creating portraits of Pope Pius VI and Emperor Joseph II of Austria.
Batoni’s famous portrait of the Sacred Heart of Jesus radiates religious symbolism that could be understood even by the multitudes of illiterate people of his day. The painting shows Jesus wearing a red tunic, which was understood to represent the color of blood and symbolizes His human martyrdom. Jesus is also shown wearing a blue mantel which denotes the color of Heaven and of the divine. The painting is wrought with poignant religious symbolism.
Bringing the Sacred Heart to Silver
Although Chris’ interpretive coin, Sacred Heart V2, is sculpted in silver, the prominence of Batoni’s painting belies the coin’s monochromatic hue and allows the viewer to experience the Sacred Heart of Jesus in living color as well.
As the Christ the King series continues with the Sacred Heart, this release once again highlights Chris’ creative artistry and his reputation as the leading designer of silver coins in the world. Upon reflection, we believe Pompeo Batoni would agree.
